In this program we’ll start by covering basic accounting principles before we move into understanding the financial statements. With this foundation we will work with you to develop key performance indicators and trend analysis that will benefit both your decision-making skills and ultimately the company’s performance.
The overall objective for this program is to equip participants with the financial skills required to support their business. This improved financial literacy will improve financial decision-making skills.

This certificate program is designed for people in business with varying levels of financial understanding. Together we will teach you how to understand the basics of your business from a financial perspective which will increase your value to the business. We will be using actual financial information from your company during our private one-on-one sessions in order to ensure that your company is making the best up to date and accurate financial decisions.

Program Outline
Upon completion of this 11 unit, 21-week course, a certificate will be issued to each participant.
There will be a quiz at the end of each session.
Unit 1
Introduction to Accounting and Financial Statements
4 hours in class and 4 one on one
Description
In this session we will discuss the key accounting concepts every business owner/financial manager needs to know. We will review the various components of the financial statements in detail and break-down all of the components.
Objectives
Immediately raise everyone’s financial confidence by being able to identify and discuss key items within their financial statements.
Unit 2
The Income Statement, Balance Sheet and Statement of Retained Earnings

Description
This session covers a more in-depth understanding of the four key financial statements: the income statement, the balance sheet, the statement of retained earnings and the statement of cash flow.
Objectives
After this session students will have the tools to be able to identify and read their corporate financial statements.
Unit 3
Interpreting Financial Statements: Financial Performance, Trend and Ratio Analysis

Description
In this session students will develop a deeper understanding of the financial statements and learn how to interpret the results of their company’s financial performance by doing a trend analysis and accompanying ratio analysis.
Objectives
Give you the ability to interpret and analyze your financial statements. This in turn will present you the detailed understanding of where your company is performing well, where your company needs improvement and how to tweak its performance.
Unit 4
The Accounting Function

Description
This session will show you how company sales and expenses get turned into numbers on your financial statements.
Objectives
The goal is to allow better communication between the bookkeeper, accounting manager and business owner by clearly defining everyone’s role in the accounting function of an organization.
Unit 5
The Ins and Outs of
Creating a Budget

Description
This session will deal with how to create budgets that will help you understand how a business is performing, identify issues in a timely manner and allow you to confidently plan for the future.
Objectives
This session will give students the confidence to set appropriate targets to help build and improve the financial performance of their business.
Unit 6
Cash is King: Cashflow Forecasting
4 hours in class and 4 one on one
Description
This session will teach you how the working capital cycle works and ultimately to
understand how money flows through corporate accounts.
Objectives
After completing this section of the course, students will understand how to improve cashflow within their business.
Unit 7
Key Performance Indicators
4 hours in class and 4 one on one
Description
At this stage we will introduce what key performance indicators are and discover which KPIs are important for improving the performance of your business.
Objectives
We will teach you how to determine the key performance indicators that are best suited to monitor the performance of your business on a regular basis.
Unit 8
Financial Reporting
4 hours in class and 4 one on one
Description
Learn what financial reporting is and why it’s important. We’ll also teach you which financial reports are required versus relevant as well as about financial report timing.
Objectives
Students will be able to determine what financial reports are best suited for different corporate situations and how regularly different reports should be completed.
Unit 9
Financial Strategy
4 hours in class and 4 one on one
Description
This unit brings everything together by covering how to build a financial business plan. Both short-term and medium-term financial strategy planning will be covered.
Objectives
Learn the importance of having both 30-day plans as well as 3-year business plans and what financial information should be displayed.
Unit 10
Weekly Scorecards
4 hours in class and 4 one on one
Description
This unit will focus on how to develop weekly and leading indicators that are important for monitoring your KPIs and your corporate financial strategy.
Objectives
Learn how to monitor the progress of your company’s KPIs and your financial strategy by developing appropriate weekly and leading indicators.
Unit 11
Accounting Controls and Processes
2 hours in class and 2 one on one
Description
We will teach you what key controls are needed to maintain highly functional accounting practices. We will look at case studies on how fraud occurs and learn how to safeguard against fraud.

Learn key internal control procedures that are important for avoiding fraud within your company.
